Legislative Overview
Legislative Watch provides an overview of bills introduced in each state since January 2021, as well as links to the actual legislation.
Each bill contains stated and unstated reasons for its creation, like sex-trafficking, risk to public safety, high use by the public, or special-interest group control.
The impetus for bills can be well-intentioned—all of us want to end the horror of human trafficking—yet legislators often have limited knowledge or understanding of Reiki practice and/or the fact that human trafficking may be part of organized crime and not a single incident. Reiki practitioners and other complementary practices end up being unfairly targeted.
How this impacts you, your clients, and your students
State licensing boards, knowing little or nothing about Reiki practice, yet will determine how you practice.
Inadequate representation on licensing boards is the norm
One or two members represent a dozen or more unique therapies.
Reiki, alone, has more than 150 different practice styles.
Licensing and educational requirements
increase the cost of practice
reduce the number of practitioners
increase costs for consumers
generate unnecessary barriers with higher fees to practice
increase unemployment
discriminate against low wage earners, women and people of color
